Early Christians were mostly the poor or slaves. They also had to be really committed because if they were caught they would face the death penalty because they didn't worship the emperor. In the beginning, the Romans didn't care that people were Christians as long as they also worshiped the Roman's Gods. But, worshiping the Roman Gods was a problem because it goes against their monotheistic religion. With this, they had to keep themselves a secret, away from the rest of the society. They would often up in either an under ground tomb or in houses marked with Ichthus. Ichthus is the greek word for fish but its an acronym for Jesus Christ, Son of God, and Savior. This symbol was a mark so that people knew that they were Christians and that they could talk to them about Christian things without the Romans knowing.
